I agree that the draw for the master's event did not feel right. Here's what happened!
At the time of the draw there were 16 players signed up for early start and 5 players for late start. Stuart Thomson and I allocated 8 byes for the early start and 3 for the late start. We thought this was fair as there was still time for other players to sign-up for the late start. We were horrified to find that when we were getting ready to do the late start draw that one player had dropped out leaving us with only 4 players and each with a bye. We agree this is not right. We announced there were buy-backs but only one player said yes. We found that player (Malcolm Davis) was playing doubles so we immediately refunded his buy-back money. Why were there no othere buy-backs? I've checked the draw sheets and all or all but one of those that could have bought back were playing doubles. In other words there was no one to buy-back. I've learned to dislike (hate maybe is a better word) the concept of early/late start. If your readers have any suggestions they can send them to me and we will discuss them locally.
Thanks for playing and we'll do better next year.
Jerry
