I could have told you that you would get more than you expected... In fact, it would probably do well to act indignant and offended at their first offer!

I didn't when I totalled my 85 t-bird... Like you, I was happy to get more than I actually paid for the car... But it is all a game, and if one question like:

What??????? You must be joking!!! I need AT LEAST XX,XXX for that car!!!!!!!

...makes you an extra $500, well it is time well spent, you know? Insurance companies make money hand over fist... You can tell them you found a car just like yours selling for $1k over what they offer and then you hear the NEXT amount they are willing to pay.

It also works on the personal injuries suffered in accidents too, btw. They offered me like $4K and eventually settled for $12K when I suffered whiplash. It is like going to the SWAP meet. If you don't haggle, you get taken.
