Pat Gibson used to play doubles on Sunday... But doubles is a social event, and everyone likes it. It can be tedious, but it is here to stay.

Why not start the masters at 2 pm for those who want to play in doubles at 7pm, and allow buybacks up to 16 or at the most 32, depending on the size of the tournament...

if say only 14 entrants are taken... 7 winners will draw for 1 bye. Or, someone like ME or Howard Markowitz who realize the equity is the same may buy the last two places?

More likely you will go over 16 but maybe only reach 20 entreants. This maximizes the number of entrants and you can make them random by inserting new brackets of 4... ie: waiting until you get 4, so someone noting that Neil just lost to Ray and bought back... will not decline to enter based on the idea he is going to have to play NEIL.

So twenty players play... and every effort should be made to have an EVEN number of original entrants. If you have 19 and can't get 20, #19 saves his entry or maybe he will pay double to get into round 2.

OK so with 10 winners from the original 20, maybe a few buy back but if none do then you draw for 12 byes and only 8 players have to play second round matches. 4 of them will win so only 4 guys will be particularly unhappy about the turn of events, but they can get happy at the next tournament maybe.

Maybe make the start instead of 2 and 7... Just at 4pm, and carry on in this fashion. Don't award byes based on initial entries because then what do you do with those who want to buy back and that spot has been taken by a bye???

You want more entries, and the players want a bigger prize pool... It is a win/win situation. I don't think anyone will have a problem if I want to pay double and skip a round, or rebuy because I am steamed that SM kicked my ass for the 4th damn time in a row!

just my $.02.
