10 players draw for 6 byes... Only 4 players have to play and 2 of them will win so, you only really have two unhappy campers who both are most likely going to be luckier at the next event.

It's fair, it accomodates players on first come first serve and maximizes efficiency and eliminates the guesswork of byes. KISS principle.
