Well, you had more info on Hand 1 than you gave us. It helps a lot to know your opps. Still a tough one, though.

I think I figured the 2nd hand pretty well (after sleeping on it) but it turned out opp had a hand I didn't expect -- I thought s/he would have raised preflop with that hand (and glad to see you agree).

One thing that constantly comes up when trying to figure out what your opp has (and I see this as much when other people are analyzing) is that you can't count on opp doing the right thing! That seems like an "intangible" which you have to factor in with your gut.

BTW (with regards to your Moral #2), what's to keep me from pretending I'm cashing in and then playing (with a bluff hand)? :)
