This reminds me of BG: You can't get opp to drop a take if you don't send it over. What good would checking do you? If opp doesn't have an ace he might throw this in, even with a hand that can beat you. If he has the ace he'll probably call and then you can decide to check on the river (assuming you think you're beaten) or raise if you think you can push him out then (but not likely if he's holding an ace). It seems like betting now is no worse than a wash (when you're going to lose the hand) since if you show weakness now, opp will likely bet on the river (when you're beaten) and you will probably call since you'll know less(?) then on what kind of hand he has. Better to be the predator than the prey.
