I do not like playing with more than 1 person in a chouette I don't at least know through someone else/ABT tournaments. As far as I know over the 4 years I've been going to tourneys, there have only been two times including this incident where someone has stiffed a chouette. There are many steps we could take to prevent such things but realistically, nobody is going to. It's too much hassle or at least seen as such.

When I was playing in France the first year I started playing I won like 1200 francs one night and the guy didn't have the money on him but said he could pay me tomorrow or I could follow him to the ATM. You'd better damn well believe I followed him to the ATM, he paid, and came back the next day to play. At the time, not knowing him well enough, I wasn't going to risk it. I'd do the same thing with a player in a chouette that I didn't know. Not to fault Rod, it's not his fault he gets stiffed, but I wouldn't have accepted the "I'll pay you in the morning before the last chance" unless someone else I knew & trusted vouched for him.
