UBK and me won the doubles. Our opponents offered us a split when we were 1-0 down. We accepted. We continued to play the match after making this agreement. . 25% of the total of 1st and 2nd obvioulsy was more than 25% of second place. I dont think Bill agreed to participate in any future hege arrangement made by his opponents so I don't quite understand what the contention of these opponents is if Bill is just asking for 25% of second. I am going to see Bill today and will ask him to clarify.

One of the 2 opponents is a regular in a chou in Chicago in which Bill plays. Bill knows him for yearss and has contrbuted to paying for his care when he was ill. My point being the hege money was certainly not Bill's primary concern. Bill just didn't want to get screwed, but of course a misunderstanding is always possible.

On the question whether or not Howard should interject himself into such a dispute, we don't know if these guys agreed to have Howard act as arbiter. I always make a note of what any Hege agreement is, usually right on the score sheet, in the presence of my opponent. I think that a tournament director should honor clear proof of an agreement of this sort, if it were in writing. Maybe, because Bill knows one of these guys well he didn't feel it necessary to commit a simple agreement to writing, which is unfortunate.

I think the guy that had your board should be obligated to come up with a convincing story if he is to be permitted to play in a tournament, if I were the tournament director. I respect Neil's position of not wanting to participate in any tournament where known thieves are permitted to play. That also applies to guys that just walk away from a chou without any payout. I think that any unethical behavior that takes place in the tournament room, such as in a chou, should be subject to the director's sanctions given a fair hearing takes place.
