Why Rory is barred from watching my matches in the Chicago Open next year

In Response To: Why Rod Covlin is barred from the Chicago Open next year (rory)

I was playing in the finals against Larry Taylor, who appeared to be kinda nervous. Bill Riles was filming the match for posterity, which probably turned out to be kind of a disadvantage for me... Because I watched Larry make a checker play error that cost him a game in the semi-finals vs. Scott Casty, and now he was making them against me in the finals.

Realizing that the videotape would be littered with illegal plays, I decided to ensure that Larry made legal moves. Normally I would allow him to play illegally and then determine if it was in my best interests to correct him, but in this case... I wanted to save Bill from the horror of having to make adjustments for illegal checker plays when he entered the match into Snowie later. I am not even sure it is possible to enter an illegal move into Snowie... So, you get the picture.

Rory didn't watch the whole match but Bill Davis, and Patrick Gibson both did. They are both seasoned TD's, and even though I had to shush PG for interjecting when I was telling Larry not to fast roll anymore... Everything was going okay... Until Larry made another illegal move late in the match. I told him to "play it legally" and described the error he had made to him. He put the checkers in a placement that was legal and then Rory spoke up...

He said, "no, the checkers have to go back to the original position and then be moved legally". PG the MFIC said no they didn't and I think BD concurred. I didn't have an objection to the placement of the checkers as long as they were legal, but at this moment Rory decided to exercise his wings as the "director". Repeating that the checkers had to be replaced in the original position and then moved legally and he followed that with: "That is my ruling".

Well, this wasn't my first rodeo, and I didn't ASK for a ruling. I corrected my opponent and I handled it. If I HAD called for a ruling, I would have wanted the actual tournament director to make it. (ie: Howard Markowitz). Not the well meaning but overstepping his bounds Rory.

Rory, you need to chill, brother. When you are needed you will be summoned. I did not need you, Larry did not need you, and two senior directors saw no problem... but YOU made a fuss anyway. Stop it. Thank you.

Having said that I am at a loss as to why there were only 39 participants at a Chicago ABT tournament. Chicago is a city with 6 active backgammon clubs, isn't it? What is the population of Chicago? Evidently there is some friction among the factions? 2 out of the 39 players were from Los Angeles...

Rory did a nice job on the food, I was always full. But he failed to deliver on a promise to me and he made a joke about it, strike one. He insisted on making a ruling when nobody asked for one, strike two... Make a conscious effort not to micromanage everything or you will strike out as a director before you get out of the on deck circle in my opinion. Listen to Howard and calm down a bit...

BTW there are only 144 hours in a week, so to put in 500 hours in 4 months... Well that accounts for about 5 weeks right there, an obvious exaggeration for a new father. Good job, but spend a little time trying to figure out why your attendance was so low... Without LA people and ABT contenders... You had about 30 players. That is not enough in a city like Chicago. Go to LA where Pat Gibson toils and you will see twice that many, just as you did 2 months ago at the Midwest Championships that Bill Davis runs. Learn from your peers, don't overrule them as an apprentice.
