Kudos to Chiva....

I'm glad to hear that attendees were happy with this event. Word-of-mouth is excellent advertising.
In addition to some things you mention, I add that the lateness of the announcement of the tournament likely hurt a bit. But by next year everyone should be aware of it (please get it onto CJC's calender as quickly as possible, Chiva) so that issue will disappear.
I do think the $100 discount, though well intended, was a bit of a turn-off. One thing that I don't remember being brought up: In response to the point made by some that ("you locals have nothing to complain about since you get to stay at home and/or have minimal travel costs"), I think it is worth noting this is true for ANY tournament yet only this one (to my knowledge) used the entry-fee discount tactic. E.g. Chicago players are better off for a Chicago Ty than DC-area players were for this particular event.
I do like your (Richard's) solution for a surcharge better, if extra $ is needed to lessen the hotel cost. But again, a good attendance next year will likely make this issue a thing of the past. Let's all keep this event in our minds for next year. "US Open Champion" is quite a badge to wear proudly.
