How to play 55

Three of the fives look automatic: 25/20/15*/10. (I guess you could make the 15-point and burn 6/1, but that seems like a waste of a very good spare.) Then it's between 10/5 and 20/15, either leaving one checker 14 spots from home (but no shots) or two checkers in the outfield, capable of hitting one of White's two remaining blots but paying off to an immediate 4-3 or 4-4.

I note that gammons are still in the picture, but only for White. That argues for getting one all the way to safety. Secondly, even without considering gammons, 3/36 vs. 0/36 is quite a bit of volunteering when the alternative doesn't look at all bad. (If White is entering immediately Blue has some cleaning up to do in either case.)

Summary: 25/20*/5.
