Neil's integrity is beyond reproach in my book and there are no ulterior motives there in my opinion.

However, I wish that in general more of the backgammon community would stop looking at tournaments in terms of Return On Investment and start looking at it as Entertainment / R&R / vacation to do something you love which in most things in life has a cost. Geez. If every so often you hit the jackpot, well great. But assume the money is spent and have a good time.

I've competed seriously in the past in things other than backgammon and I can say that in those competitions, the rake on entry fees was 100%. I went because I liked competition, I liked playing, liked learning, improving and winning. And I had a great time with no chance at all to turn a profit.
