I've always used SiSoft synthetic CPU benchmarks to judge relative speeds for GNU-bg. Most common benchmarks work components (like video) that GNU-bg doesn't stress. It's all about the processor, baby!

Note about the SiSoft benchmarks: they are multithreaded and take advantage of every CPU on the chip. Some benchmarks don't do that.
