That is quite possible. Perhaps Hugh Hefner, or other deep pockets who like backgammon, ought to have a 120% return event at the Playboy mansion and charge $20 for a room. Bob could still stay with his cousin in hollywood if he wants to, to save money, but I myself would prefer to support the director and the venue willing to hold the event and I would bite the bullet and sleep in a bunny's bed.

Richard Munitz is right on. Other people pay for their recreation and backgammon is rare in that we have an opportunity to make our expenses occaisionally. I do it about 60% of the time at last count, and I would venture to guess that some of the players complaining the most have similar chances to break even or better.

I also agreed 100% with Richard when he stated that he could not fathom how someone who would pay 300-500 for airfare to LA, rent a car, pay 300-400 for a room and stuff, YET... would feel cheated if they had a 20% higher entry fee at a home event they could drive to! Give me a chance to do that and I will drive 220 miles round trip from Bakersfield... Or get a motel 6 if I am nauseated that it is going to cost $100 per night for a room at the venue. But, I do not get nauseated and I know it helps the directors bottom line and they may be able to garner free breakfast for players if they get enough room nights.... Like Patrick Gibson did for the upcoming LA Open, for instance. So many backgammon players are freeloaders and bums it is disgusting to me. Maybe they ought to examine the reason they play? Does backgammon exist to make you money? Perhaps players ought to look at the bright side, and ask NOT what backgammon can do for them....

ASK, what YOU can do for backgammon.

Anyone who feels like they got the short straw please contact me immediately for a $100 refund. All I would like for you to do is give me a 20% discount on my expenses of $1300, (before entry fees). Do we have a deal? I have created a special 800 number for your convenience.. Please call soon so I can double your refund, because I am currently having a "happy hour" ok? Please call now @ 1-800-IB-CHEAP

I know for a fact that one of the guys who would have anted up for the US Open and a chance to be the US Champion is one Mr. Kazaross... despite any gimmicks, and so I find it highly unfortunate that he was one of the naysayers who discouraged attendance due to something he called the "high effective rake". Get outta here! The ONLY reason you didn't go was your daughter's graduation, period.

I can tell you for sure that Chiva can't spend one dime of his "high effective rake", because it did NOT cover his expenses. Nobody can afford to hold a 120% return event with free rooms and 3 square meals a day, so, they do the best they can. If you like to play, if you want to play, if backgammon has given something back to you, or even if it hasn't and you want to compete against the best... then ante up. If not, then shut up.
