Get outta here! The ONLY reason you didn't go was your daughter's graduation, period."
Neil replies.. yes I didn't go due to Cheyenne's graduation. But allready it was clear to me that the perceived expenses were keeping other some players away. Players due talk amoungst themselves you know. And admittadely I did voice some concerns Memorial Day weekend about the what was being perceived by more than a few players as a gimmicky rebate, but I certainly didn't stand up at the podium and broadcast it over the loud speaker.
Like it or not, players have a choice of what events to go to and for many players, their discretionary budgets for BG are limited. This is made worse by the sucky economy now. When there is a perception of something being expensive a few more people shy away than normal would. When there is a perception of something being a gimmick or hard to understand, a few more people will shy away.
Initially I loved the $100 rebate idea, but when I was told that it was a reduction in entry fee and also a reduction in the prize pool, I was not happy since I expected it would hurt attendance overall.
What you or I think doesn't matter as much as what the masses think.
Yeah...it is unfortunate that there's a few cheapskates in BG, but some players really have to watch their finances, while others are just cheap by nature.
Just like you...I tell it like I see it... and sometimes face the consequences.
As far as playing for fun, I play for fun..would I play if ROI was somewhat worse, likely, but not if it was considerably worse, since there'd be considerably fewer players. Such is the nature of the BG masses who play tourney BG.
In contrast to chess and bridge, the average BG players is lots more interested in playing for money and having some gamble. This is why I don't think the ideas proposed by Phil to make it lots easier for players to win small ammounts of MP's would be much of an aid to the current situation.
One thing that could and should be done is to improve things for beginners at these events. That might make it easier for players to coax some of the many players they meet online out to live events.
Chiva's pro/am doubles event was a good way to give lessor players some insight into how champs think and execute.
