Some backgammon players are good at other things besides math and they might conclude that the all time ABT champion who currently LEADS this year's ABT race and dearly WANTS to be the first and ONLY one to have won it twice in a ROW... MIGHT have had an ULTERIOR motive in discouraging attendance due to the so called "gimmicks". (ie: less participation would mean a smaller swing in ABT points)
This is a little sketchy. I've never gotten any kind of bad impression from Neil when he's talked about BG.
PLEASE have the same gimmick and hold the tournament in Los Angeles next time, Chiva, if East coasters have a problem with it.
I think the gimmick was a bad idea, honestly. Although it wasn't the reason that I didn't attend. It probably did contribute a part in people's (locals' or otherwise) consideration of whether or not to attend.
A lot of things contributed to poor attendance: the state of the economy in general, the cost of the hotel, the very difficult scheduling, the relative lack of marketing/advertising, the hotel gimmick, etc. All in all just a very difficult thing to pull off.
Vegas was still relatively well attended but the rest of the city looked pretty dreary when I was there, business is slooooow in Vegas.
