Maybe this is not wholly rational, but when I travel to a BG tournament, I look at the transportation and hotel cost as an entertainment expense, like going to a concert or sports event. It is not part of the "gambling budget." But the return on entry fee is important. It's why I've never entered the intermediate/advanced division. And while I may have had negative equity in many of the chouettes in which I've participated, I would never play if a rake were involved.
Presumably, the entry fees are set by tournament directors in order to encourage maximum participation, and in some cases maximum return for the director. That's fine. But don't be surprised if a discriminatory entry fee structure creates some resentment. As I've said before, this could be handled easily by a voucher system that would apply to all participants.
