Nice explanation Rich.

My main concern is that what happened on GamesGrid would spill over to this (as of now vaporous) rating system: if we "know" you as a good player you start at rating X. If we don't "know" you as a good player we rate you at Y. Eventually if we misjudged, you'll still end up where you belong, so it won't matter.

(So then ask what the "eventually" timescale is. Then try and decide if the time you wait to get an answer to that question is longer than the time it takes for your rating to reach the proper value. You'll have plenty of time to answer this last question.) And just for the record, I never belonged to GamesGrid (and was never categorized AFAIK).
