In Response To: Attendance ... Perhaps it is the Money (Dan Pelton)

I think the yield from novice classes is pretty low. I recall Butch Meese's story about teaching a class (I don't know the number of attendees) at Bell Labs in Indy back around 1980. One player emerged -- Larry Strommen.

Last year I taught four classes (two beginning and two low-intermediate) at a local camp for business people ("Mickey's Camp"). Total number of students was ~20. I have heard nothing from anyone (e.g. Hoosier BG Club) that any of these 20 has showed up to play an organized event.

I don't say this as discouragement. It's probably true no matter what is taught in these types of adult "continuing education" (non-credit) classes. But it seems to be a reality. And it might be different in a high school setting, for example.
