A conflict between axioms here:
Don't race while behind in the race.
Always run the last checker.
Don't build points 6-apart.
It seems to me that Blue wants to hit to gain in the race, and running out only gives White hitting chances. How much worse off is Blue going to be next turn if he hangs around? He may have to break a point (like the midpoint or the 10-point) but that is OK. The checker on the 24-point is pretty safe where it sits. Build the board and hang back for hitting chances. Give White a chance to roll somehthing awkward. 24/16 puts zero pressure on White's next roll. Missing leaves no blots and maintains the race lead. Hitting is gravy.
