The solution... (?)

I kept win/loss and elo ratings, just for my local weekly tournaments, in the mid 1980's. On my Atari computer. And printed out the results each month. It became clear that some of our regular players were getting horrible ratings.
Who would want to know themselves, more less to have others see, that they were at a 33% win rate (e.g. won 33 matches and lost 67 matches)? Too much NEGATIVE feedback, and too much exposure.
So I stopped doing the localized ratings. Then about 3-4 years later I started submitting the weekly-sheets to KG for his national ratings database. Lots of us were pleased to see our players getting into the top 100 or 200 players in the USA. We paid Kent for the data entry work to include the weeklies. ($5 for a bracket of 16, so each of our two weeklies (6-rounds each) usually cost about 12-15$ and came from a $1 rake to each player as part of their entry fees [deducted from the prize pool]).
Now, with the INTERNET access, data gets a much larger audience and WE MUST NOT LET the poor stats become visible!
I do agree that there can be some player drop out due to negative feedback, but if we manage the visibility to only be able to view those who are above a certain ELO or w/l ratio, then keeping CHAMPIONSHIP level statistics should not have a negative impact of our backgammon population. And definitely keep it out of the Intermediate and Beginner divisions.
