Just as a technique aspect here, I want to get my back men split nice and early, get them ready to start moving and anchoring, so hitting and splitting seems automatic to me here. The error concerned may be small, and it may be a question of technique, but I think I would always want to split the back. Unless I find myself in some kind of uber-BGG situation, then I may slot it lol. I hope not to find myself that steamed though - certainly in match play!
