In Response To: What to do about this what-a-to-do? (phil Simborg)

I once asked for a ruling in a critical match. Although I felt the issue was covered by the written rules, the director ruled against me. I continued without protest and lost the match, almost entirely because of this ruling. I later heard the director say that he realized he had made the wrong ruling because he (subconciously) wanted the other player to win.

It is easy to take a case where there is a clear bad guy and say that the director should do what is right. Things are not always so clear in practice. Much must be left to the director's discretion - I am in favor of that. I'm not in favor of seeing the directors suspend clear written rules when they exist to do what they think is right. The problem is - it isn't always right. In my example, if the director had followed the letter of the law instead of his emotions, he would have made a better decision.
