But the rules do, of course, say "No set of rules should deprive the Director of his freedom of judgment or prevent him from finding the solution dictated by fairness and compatible with the circumstances of a particular case." It's the very first rule in the book, Rule 1.1.

Anyone who says, "I don't like the result, but I have to enforce the rules as written," is making a false statement. Rule 1.1 is as much of a rule as any other rule. No director is forced to make an unjust ruling unless he or she feels it is appropriate to do so, in which case it's presumably not so unjust after all.

This is as clear a case of angle-shooting as one could ever hope to find. Allowing one premature roll after another to pass without comment, and then suddenly demanding a draconian sanction once a crucial situation arises, is unacceptable conduct in my book. One of the most important reasons to have a rule like Rule 1.1 is so directors do not have to chose between acting lawlessly or becoming a helpless victim of angle-shooting.

Angle-shooting continues as a practice precisely because some directors are foolish enough to reward it, by making absurd rulings under the mistaken guise that "the rules require it." And those who believe shame and ostracism are sufficient remedies are overlooking the fact that, by choosing to shoot this particular angle, the player has already consciously decided that thousands of dollars in prize money are more important to him than the potential for shame and ostracism.
