I just came back on because I realized I need to elaborate.
The director in question is an excellent director. He honestly tried to make the right ruling. That's why there was no bad blood over this. I remember that he agognized over it for several minutes before ruling. And, I remember saying to him that I wasn't going to hold it against him and I have been true to my word. But, this was an absolutely devestating loss to me. I can't begin to describe how much it hurt. And, it hurt to know that I lost because the director wanted my opponent to win. To this day, I wish the right thing had been done.
The director could have thought about the rules and made a ruling based on the rules. Instead, he did what "felt right". He later realized that his thinking was colored by his emotions, that's why it felt right to rule against me. And he was man enough to confess that this had happened a little later. He deserves a lot of credit for his honesty.
Here's my point, better stated. When a director makes an emotional judgement and fashions a decision around emotions, it may not be a very good decision. It is easy to root for the underdog. It is easy to dislike the chronic jerk. It is easy to want to help a friend. The director needs enforce the rules as fairly as possible irregardless of his or her emotions.
