what a great idea! I am really sorry that I did not have time to read this one before going to Novi for the MSBC. It truly is a way to generate more interest in backgammon, at least at the local level, since no travel costs apply. And it should build to work at the Regional ABT events as well.

The challenge is the recording of all the matchups that occur at these many events. Mike Darooge's software at backgames.org facilitates the data entry and tracking of each club (and could easily do so for the ABT events as a "special" club). I am unsure as to how it might handle (or not) the different types of master points (e.g. anthracite, zircon, emerald, ruby, diamond etc. (;-), but certainly it could be enhanced for some dollars of programming time.

As we decided in Novi, this year and probably next year, we will only be recording ABT events at the Championship & Masters level. This for win/loss and ELO tracking and masking it to only show those with specific w/l or elo's at a minimum level --only making visible the stats for the top 30-50 players.

Perhaps starting in 2010 with "gemstone" points earned for all match wins (in the same Championship/Master events --but then consider moving to all divisions with gemstone master points --similar to bridge's ACBL.

I am sure that if it got rolling at the club level to point toward a "national BG association" awards (certificates and visibility of point levels acheived), that the ABT events would then lure many of those chasing these point levels.

"what a great idea", we need only to evolve into a national organization for standardization and administration to make this happen. The challenge, of course is to get agreement and backing from the tournament directors and top players to establish a "working board of directors" and then an "operating staff" that can make this happen --no small challenge! Since monies are a big part of the ABT events, and even the local events, the additional challenge may be that of "legitimizing" the legality of playing for backgammon cash prizes. This may NOT be a do-able thing.
