Backgammon is a social game (like poker) and I would hate to see the friendly banter removed from the game - even when it really matters. Some of the greatest entertainment value both for the players and for the spectators comes from this. Certainly, unsportsman-like statements or constant whining or gloating have no place in the game. If you're not into the banter, just say so, or put headphones on and tune out. But I would sure hate to see backgammon tournament play become a sterile "hear a pin-drop" setting. Neil and I played an ABT finals match in Colorado a couple of years ago, and much of the feedback I got from spectators afterwards was how much they enjoyed watching the match - not so much because of the interesting positions or decisions, but because our friendly banter, humor, and colorful commentary made it much more fun.
