Keeping emotions in check -- OT

Your mention of Nicklaus and Tiger bring another facts to mind.
Jack won 18 majors and Tiger has won 14 to date. However, as I recall, Jack finished second in a major an additional 21 times. The combined total of 39 firsts and seconds in majors is beyond Tiger's comprehension and capabilities. I think Woods is entirely focused on winning majors and, when it becomes apparent he will not win a given event, he mails it in. Nicklaus never gave up, ever.
Similarly, most know that Nolan Ryan holds the major league baseball record of seven no-hitters -- I think Sandy Koufax is second with four. However, few realize Ryan also had 19 complete game one-hitters. A feat almost beyond comprehension.
It brings to mind another baseball consideration. Many talk of the recent single season home run totals of Bonds, Sosa, and McGwire (and Maris with 61 in '61) surpassing Ruth's single season bests. They also talk of Aaron and Bonds (perhaps A-Rod and others in the future) surpassing Ruth's career home run figures. But the eras must be considered. Ruth, at least in one season -- maybe more -- hit more home runs himself than any other TEAM in baseball. He was so much better than anyone else of his era that they couldn't see him ahead of them. Williams, Mays, Mantle, Aaron, Musial, etc. were great -- but they didn't lap the field of their competitors as did Ruth.
Were Watson to win tomorrow it will, in my opinion, rival any sports feat in history -- fully 11+ years older than anyone ever to win a major before. Amazing.
