As far as hitting/not on the 23-point, I can understand the upside of giving opp more rope to crunch (allowing him/her to enter more quickly) by leaving that checker alone. No one seems to mention that it is harder for the back Blue checker to escape from the 24-point. Keep in mind that Blue wants to concentrate on making the 7- and 8-points so he's not necessarily going to jump out with the first six (or step up with the first 3).
If you're not hitting on the 23-point, you are forcing yourself to jump a broken 4-prime. That's no gimme. (When push comes to shove, you could hit later with the ace, I realize.)
