I'm now of the opinion there's only 2 options for backgammon software: (1) very expensive + supported or (2) free + no support

What do you regard as very expensive? IMHO neither BGB or XG are very expensive for what they offer. I can't judge XG-support but with BGB I give you every support you can ask for. Probably better support than from anyone else (again not knowing XG-support. it may be excellent)

If you meant there are two common sense alternatives: making it for a living (i.e. very expensive + support) or just as a pastime (free and unsupported) I agree with you.
