World championships in Vegas

In Response To: World championships in Vegas (Carter Mattig)

Tournament results: A site dedicated to recording major tournament results which includes hyperlinks. Here are Paul Magriel's poker results, someone point me to a page showing his backgammon results ...

Match recording: Complete recording of all matches from the quarter finals onwards. Make it a condition of entry. If you don't want your match recorded, bad luck, you can't play. Poker players felt the same way about hole cameras. Poker would not be what it is now without two things, the internet, and hole cameras.

Scheduling: Like it or not, poker is king, and when the WSOP changed dates, Monte Carlo should have followed suit. July in Vegas, just after the Main Event and the Bellagio Cup is ideal.

Divisions: let's assume backgammon rises in popularity, is there any realistic way to keep track of who is a beginner, intermediate or open player? Maybe the buy-ins could dictate your supposed level of competence, as it tends to do in poker. Be careful to not try duplicate what are the major problems in Monte Carlo, cost and elitism. Moving to Vegas (or anywhere) reduces cost, but make sure you keep in mind those players that are not world elite. You have many average Joes play an event or two at the WSOP. I don't hear enough about making backgammon appeal to the masses, namely those at a level or two lower than the pros.

Events: Run enough events that will make most people happy. Include Women's, Masters', Doubles, Tavli, other variants? Can a combination of backgammon variations be akin to HORSE in poker?

Scoring: make quarter finals onwards best of 3 shorter matches, rather than one match to 21-25pts.

Merchandise: I would expect a major backgammon tournament to be THE place to find a good board and all the accessories I want.

Education: I agree with Joe. Lectures and information sessions by experienced players and coaches. A boot camp! Yes please!

Coverage: take a look at PokerNews at the WSOP. Interviews with players before, during and after tournaments, interviews with officials, other random videos, play by play coverage, payout lists, photos, etc etc. Andy Bell and the WSOB are doing what I would expect for the World Championship. Andy has posted about 15 videos from Cannes in just the past couple days.
