When you talk about BG as it's played by many (probably the majority) you can forget about the doubling cube.
A match which maintains some of the skill is a freezeout with either all games DMP or all games with the standard simple win, gammon, backgammon outcomes. A freezeout is simply a contest where the first person to LEAD the match by N points is the winner, where N is specified before commencing the match, of course.
A big problem with freezeouts is the time it takes to complete a match or more specifically the distribution of times for matches.
Maybe a series of DMP games with a simple majority -- e.g. first person to win four DMP games (i.e. "best of seven").
As we all know, there is quite a bit of skill involved in DMP games. But it does allow those without cube knowledge/skill to get involved, and that's quite a large segment of the worldwide BG community (as mentioned above).
