I'm not sure how you know how "most of us" feel (although we will no doubt hear from many who agree with you). I for one derive little confidence from the various screening mechanisms that I encounter on a daily basis in Washington, DC, and even less so when flying. Many seem designed more for public conficdence building than for substance. One day nail clippers and lighters are banned; the next day they are not. In the U.S., shoes must come off, but not in the UK. In the U.S., cellphones can be used on the tarmac, but not in the UK. For awhile, the UK insisted on only one carry-on bag, including computers, purses, etc. (This required stuffing everything into one bag to pass security and then repacking it.) So one must really question the need for these measures, and whether determined terrorists could overcome them. Anyway, Achim was only describing his own reaction to those measures, which aside from being unpleasant, expensive, and poorly considered, have diminished tourism in the U.S. Of course it's essential to protect against terrorism, but that doesn't mean that these intrusive measures are the right answer.
