It's not just the airports, although for me the "security" -- the constant announcements, the long lines, the various restrictions -- (along with spartan flying conditions) has taken the pleasure out of air travel (and that's without being fingerprinted upon arrival). You'd be amazed at how many security guards are deployed at federal buildings in DC. And every agency has to issue its own ID cards, so getting into another building is a minor ordeal. Obviously, for federal buildings, security is an absolute necessity, as was made clear by the Okla bombing in 1995, as well as 9-11. But it is galling to consider the vast resources expended on it, especially since for most buildings it could easily be defeated.
That is an interesting point about profiling. I think they actually DO profile (not just ethnic, but based on behavior and other characteristics) but they apply a certain level of screening to everyone in order to avoid charges of racism. I don't have a problem with that.
