There was an issue of Playboy in 1973 (I have it at home) with multiple BG articles -- one by Mike Lawrence.

Here are a couple more:

SI, 28 Aug 1978 -- article about Oswald Jacoby.

There was at least one issue of Gambling Times (also at home) highlighting BG -- the one I remember had Billy Eisengerg and a celebrity on the cover sitting at a BG board. Late 70's but can't remember the year.

I have a xeroxed copy of an SI article about the QE II tournament (described in DeYong's Playboy Book of Backgammon) but I don't have the date. Title is "On a Dicey Cruise" -- author Edwin Shrake. (Maybe someone can find this online.) Pretty sure it was pre-1975.
