Re: vigilance, I'm reminded of the many year(!) deception in the 70's (and apparently even later) described here:

Geller fooled scientists. He either refused to perform in front of magicians, or when he found they were watching, had a lapse of ability.

It takes someone quite knowledgeable of dice cheating to catch a dice cheat.

How long did that guy in Europe a year or two ago play with the altered dice (5's replacing deuces) before getting caught? Didn't the infamous Rocky (here in the US, btw) win several 10's of thousands of dollars before he was exposed?
