In Response To: Teach a Poker Fish (Stanley E. Richards)

I am not naïve. I do not believe that I can become a poker expert in a few months. I have no desire to play middle or high stakes poker. For several months, I will enjoy “play money” online poker. Then, I will play at small stakes for several years until I can graduate to middle stakes. Heck, I have been seriously studying backgammon since February 2004 and I am still not an expert.

It doesn't necessarily need to take years to become an expert, although it might. I studied chess for 2 years with virtually no improvement, and then went from rank amateur level to expert player in a matter of months. I would recommend against playing play money for months. Instead, play micro stakes once you get a feel for the game. Playing at $0.01 limits is fine, but that's what works for me, maybe play money will work for you.

My main advice would be to pick a game and learn it exclusively. Don't try to learn all forms of poker at once. Texas Hold Em (limit or NL) is where the action is, but there are a lot of other good games. Omaha/8 has been billed as the shark's game of the future, 2-7 triple draw is pretty juicy also, and there's always standard games like 7-card stud. Play around with them a bit, see which you like, but don't try to study everything at once.

What are the two best poker books for novices who seek to become experts?

For a variety of poker games, you could look at Super System 2. It's not the best book on any particular game (except maybe 2-7 triple draw, which is excellent), but it covers all different kinds of games. If you're going to do Hold Em (as most do), the two best books IMO are 1) Getting Started in Hold Em and 2) Small Stakes Hold Em. There are a lot more (both good and bad) books available on poker than there are on backgammon.

What is the best “free” poker Bot? What is the best professional poker Bot? What are the advantages of the professional Bot?

AFAIK, there aren't any particularly good free poker bots, and the bots are not nearly as good at poker as they are at backgammon. Best Hold Em bots are Poki and Turbo Texas Hold Em. Best poker software available is PokerTracker, which is indispensable. If you're going to get anything, get PokerTracker. There are some other free programs like PokerStove that are useful.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each popular form of poker?

Already mentioned this, but just try playing a bunch of them (for play money, or using some casino software, or against your friends or whatever). 7-stud, razz, 7-stud Hi/lo, 5-card lowball, 2-7 triple draw, limit omaha, omaha/8, pot-limit omaha games, limit hold em, NLHE. I think that covers almost all major poker games. Note that tournaments are rather different from cash games, so you can play either cash games or SNGs. If all you're concerned about is action, I think cash NL games are the way to go, but others have more fish.

Which are the best sites to play? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each site?

Don't know here. I'm in the US and haven't played poker in awhile, and there's not nearly as much stability among internet sites as there was before the legislation.
