I think your post summarizes it very good. I want to add some aspects as someone, who started poker with a long backgammon background.

First I was surprised how big swings are in poker compared to backgammon.

I agree, that books are good, but not as important as in backgammon. I think, this relates mostly to the fact, that poker is a game of incomplete information. I think,poker books help a lot to start of with tourney play. The Harrington Books are great.

What surprised me, when coming from backgammon was the difference between money game and tournament play. For me it was easier, to start with tournament poker.

Another thing, which is different is tilt. In backgammon I can roll anti jokers a hole night, still play my best game, end the session and go home

In poker it is much more difficult:) I never heard the word "bad beat story" in backgammon, but in poker every forum has a bad beat section where people will whine and tell there horror stories. If you already have been tilting in backgammon, poker is not your game!
