Somewhere in his writings (probably Paradoxes and Probabilities) Barclay Cooke says similar -- that in order to give time for a play to work you must make that move consistently. E.g. opening 4-3 -- you shouldn't vary your play (under fixed conditions -- e.g. money play and standard opponent).

I didn't believe him then and I don't believe you now.
