I almost never answer after reading other responses, and since I missed seeing an obvious hit in one of MCG's problems a couple days ago I'm underconfident that I'm even seeing the position correctly, but...

If I'm going to play 9/4, why not 6/3?

OK, it pays off immediately to 6-4 whereas 5/2 doesn't. But 5/2 runs the risk of a stripped 5-point with spares on the 6-point for the start of the bearoff.

QF says clearing the 7-point is right at one of these two scores. That could be $-play as it figures to start the bearoff more quickly (as I believe Neil mentioned).
