I also practice the technique you recommend of putting the temporary checkers away from the checkers already on the point (unless the checker already on the point is my opponent's).

As far as changing the rule to 'touch move', don't forget the annoying (current) habit of many players -- when taking a checker from the bar to bring it in, they hold it in their hand while thinking about which point to put it on. Some even toss it onto the center of the playing field, not on any point, while they think. If the rule is 'touch move' then I predict you're going to have a lot of this annoying "checker in hand" practice.
