illegally borne off checker rule

If I honestly fail to notice an illegal play by my opponent and play on, then all the spectators conclude I am a bad sport (at best) or a cheater (at worst).
So, why isn't "oh, Gregg just didn't see the illegal move" an option? That's the 'best case'.
I do have great respect for you and will always remember that you personally gave my comments during the last rules rework serious consideration (even though none of them passed the filters of the other committee members).
Having said that, I find the above argument so weak as to be ridiculous. If people who don't know you are so obtuse as to draw such a conclusion then they are going to find some other way to dislike/distrust/misunderstand you. The people who know you would never think such, and any reasonable person who didn't know you (I assume) would give you the benefit of the doubt.
There are some arguments against "legal moves" which have some validity, although IMO, not enough. I just don't think the above one is even close to being a reason to maintain the current rule.
