For those that are seeing this issue I have an experiment. Go to settings/options/"others" tab. Make a note of the current cache setting. Once you record the current one, then set the cache size to 0, save settings, exit GnuBG. Run GnuBG. . Then try to evaluate/hint the same position.

Then try with a cache size set all the way to the right (168mb/Large) / save / exit GnuBG / Run GnuBG.
