After Madison, my feelings on the baffle-tube, Part 1

All but one of my opponents agreed to use the baffle box when we played, and ALL agreed they were more "comfortable" about the rolls using them.
The tubes Chuck described should be considered only as good illustrations of the concept...they were not particularly well-designed and well made. They tip over too easily; the dice do get caught up or cocked, probably a little more than 10 percent of the time; one of them was too noisy; and they are longer than they need to be.
Neil and I spend some time working with them and examining them, but all agreed that it would be virtually impossible for anyone to cheat once it is assured that the dice inside are fair and have not been switched or loaded. (There are safeguards for this I will not go into detail about here.)
I will look into alternative designs and manufacture and report back in the future.
Bottom line is that I think players will be more comfortable with the old-fashioned baffle box, especially if they can still shake the dice in a cup and drop them into the box. Neil, Perry, myself, and many others see little chance for any foul play. It's nice to know dice are hardly ever cocked and never tossed off the board, and it's nice to know you are getting a fair roll from your opponent every time. Once you get used to the look, feel, and sound of the baffle box, you tend to feel uncomfortable without it. It also pretty much stops premature rolling, and there is no problem using it in conjunction with a clock.
We use it often in our daily chouettes and several players are disappointed when it is not there.
