I can see that for people who attend many tournaments calcuttas could start to wear thin pretty quickly. But calcuttas really aren't for the regulars; they're for newcomers and people who attend only occasional tournaments. A calcutta builds up the excitement and introduces the players to each other.
I agree that calcuttas should not be allowed to run on too long. Keep the proceedings going at a fast clip so that we can get on with the real tournament.
Your objection about it being gambling is, of course, a downside. How many other sports encourage their participants to bet on the very tournament they are participating in, let alone betting against themselves??? There is a potential for some real problems.
