I mean something like a manual 2-ply analysis, grouping the resulting positions into suitable categories in order to understand them.

In most positions it just doesn't help you, or it can be estimated just from looking at the board. I think only in very tactical situations does it make a difference.

And FWIW I agree with 13/10 13/12, though making the 9 point is my close second choice. No blots is better than more blots.
