I always give preference to fair play.
And I also like to interfere the least and let players agree among themselves, based on gentleman behaviour and common sense.
But I will never object to anything which both players decide on. If they want to flip a coin to decide who the winner of the match is, that´s fine with me too. My main interest is to run a smooth and fun tournament with as little hassle and headaches as possible.
If a big tournament board, lipped dice-cup, official tournament precision dice in use for all matches and chess-clocks are not enough and some people want to add baffle-boxes and a video-camera, I won´t object as long as I have the space for that. Imagine the size of the table all this equipment will take. Some players also love to stack chairs to have a high seating position. Some players naturally spectators or have their wifes, husbands, friends, pets, neighbors, slaves, masters, mentors, puppets, drinks, food, cigarette packs, headphones, mp3 players, cell phones, talismans (I want witnessed a 10 inch Buddha statue to be placed next to a board for luck reasons)with them. How big must a tournament room be to accommodate everybody´s need without affecting others in their space and game?
Rules are there to be respected but the first rule is "fair-play" and that´s the type of backgammon I promote and I stand for.
