Just to be devils advocate rather than any personal "baffle-box hatred", I'll try and think of some reasons against using "baffle-boxes"... (I'm assuming a side mounted "traditional" baffle boxes here)
1. It's a expense for tournament directors and/or players.
1b. It's another item to transport/store/set up.
2. They are often noisy.
3. The dice are always rolled on the same side, meaning one player's dice are on the "wrong side", and they either shake left handed or reach over the board.
3b. After an interruption, it could be harder to work out who's turn it is.
3c. Having 2 boxes solves this but at extra cost etc (point 1).
4. The box might "fail", maybe fall over or dice get stuck inside.
5. It lessens the traditional "hands-on" backgammon playing mechanics.
And I'll reiterate the point that baffle boxes don't stop the majority of direct dice manipulation that makes for the easiest/most effective cheating.
