the speed advantage xg gets is supposedly caused by its being written in assembler language could u do the same for gnu? I fear this would be a big effort and a maintenance nightmare, in particular for future evolutions.

I think that Xavier explained that for XG, XG roller setting cannot be used in rollouts because the assembler code is not reentrant. Making it reentrant (which is also a prerequisite for enabling multi-threading) is possible, but complicate.

Kind of a tradeoff between ease of coding and speed.
