I like the idea. But I don't like the idea of "top 50 is in". I agree that the list should be more exclusive and should represent a clear consensus amongst the backgammon community.
My suggestion is to do something like what is done for Baseball HOF. A list of names on a single ballot have no order; the voter simply lists people they believe worth of inclusion in the HOF. However, in order to be voted in, the person must be listed on at least N% of all ballots. For Baseball, that is 75%. Something more like 60% might be more appropriate for Backgammon.
But to do this right, it will require research to obtain names from backgammon history and hopefully to assemble a short resume for each to identify their noted accomplishments and contributions to the game. Since there will be names from the past, today's players may not be otherwise familiar with some that are deserving.
